Sydney Thunder were founded in 2011 as a foundation Big Bash franchise operated by Cricket NSW. The club represents Western Sydney and also maintains a regular home presence in Canberra.
Thunder finished eighth in BBL|15 with two wins, eight losses, four points and net run rate -1.212. The wins came against Brisbane Heat by 34 runs and Melbourne Renegades by four wickets under DLS.
David Warner scored 433 runs at a strike rate of 154, including two unbeaten hundreds and a club-record 130 not out. Daniel Sams led the bowling with 12 wickets and also made 89 runs, while Matthew Gilkes scored a career-best 232 runs at strike rate 155.7.
Thunder won their only men's BBL title in 2015/16 and returned to the Final in BBL|14. Andrew Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss for BBL|16, with Warner retained as captain and the squad still being completed.
