Sydney Thunder Team: Squad, Results, Stats & Schedule

Sydney Thunder were founded in 2011 as a foundation Big Bash franchise operated by Cricket NSW. The club represents Western Sydney and also maintains a regular home presence in Canberra.

Thunder finished eighth in BBL|15 with two wins, eight losses, four points and net run rate -1.212. The wins came against Brisbane Heat by 34 runs and Melbourne Renegades by four wickets under DLS.

David Warner scored 433 runs at a strike rate of 154, including two unbeaten hundreds and a club-record 130 not out. Daniel Sams led the bowling with 12 wickets and also made 89 runs, while Matthew Gilkes scored a career-best 232 runs at strike rate 155.7.

Thunder won their only men's BBL title in 2015/16 and returned to the Final in BBL|14. Andrew Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss for BBL|16, with Warner retained as captain and the squad still being completed.

The club's 13 July BBL|16 announcement and Cricket Australia's post-season contract list identify the same ten contracted men. That dated group is the safest current baseline while recruitment remains open.

Thunder's broader player directory still carried BBL|15 participants at the 13 August check. A previous-season match or profile listing does not prove a current contract, so the page keeps those players in past results without adding them to BBL|16.

Warner scored 433 runs at 86.60 in eight matches, the most in BBL|15, and made two unbeaten centuries. Thunder still finished 2-8 because one elite batting season could not supply complete bowling, middle-order and fielding performances across ten games.

The club's own review separated those problems: early bowling returns fell short, while the middle order could not finish the 166-run chase in Adelaide after the bowlers had kept the target reachable. Individual and team outcomes answer different questions.

The average first-innings total at ENGIE Stadium rose to 193, forty runs above BBL|14. Thunder won only one of four matches there after losing just once at the ground in the previous season.

General manager Trent Copeland said the side did not adapt quickly enough to the truer surface, particularly during the Power Surge and death overs. The lesson is more specific than 'home form': the conditions changed, and the old low-and-slow assumptions stopped fitting.

Warner's unbeaten 130 lifted Thunder to 205/4 against Hobart, but Tim Ward and Mitch Owen added 108 from 51 balls for the opening wicket. Hobart reached 207/4 in 17.5 overs, the venue's record BBL chase at the time.

A season-high team total can still expose the same bowling problem as a low-scoring loss. The page therefore labels 205/4 as Thunder's highest total, not their biggest win or evidence of a successful defence.

Rain reduced Thunder's chase to 16 overs and set a DLS target of 140. They reached 140/6 after 15.2 overs, winning by four wickets with four balls remaining rather than losing by 30 runs on the raw totals.

DLS recalculates the target for the shorter chase; it does not ask the second team to match the original 20-over score. The official result and revised innings length must stay together whenever this match is summarized.
