MI Cape Town represent Cape Town in SA20 and belong to the Mumbai Indians global franchise family. India Mumbai Indians (Pty) Ltd owns and promotes the team, while the blue-and-gold identity connects the side to Reliance Industries' wider cricket portfolio.
After finishing sixth with identical 3-7 records in both 2023 and 2024, MI Cape Town completed a dramatic turnaround in 2025. They topped the league with a record 35 points, won Qualifier 1 and beat Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs in the final for their first title.
The title defence ended at the league stage in Season 4. MI Cape Town finished sixth with three wins, six defeats, one no-result, 14 points and a -1.013 net run rate, despite Ryan Rickelton scoring 337 runs and Corbin Bosch taking 13 wickets.
Season 5 begins against Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on 20 January 2027. The published ten-game league schedule contains five home and five away fixtures, but the official Season 5 squad remains unannounced as of this update.
Roster boundary
Why does MI Cape Town show a 20-player squad when the pre-season Season 4 list had 19?
The 20 names form the completed Season 4 roster timeline, not one pre-season announcement. SA20's December list had 19 players after Thomas Kaber replaced Tabraiz Shamsi; MI Cape Town later added Kieron Pollard when Rashid Khan left for national duty.
The current club directory preserves those final names. It still does not prove a Season 5 contract, so the 2027 fixture is kept separate until a new squad is formally published.
Myth versus reality
How did three wins and one no-result produce 14 points for MI Cape Town?
SA20 awarded four points for each of MI Cape Town's three wins and two points for the abandoned Durban match. That gives 12 plus two, or 14 points; the final table shows no bonus points for the team.
The total is not based on a two-points-per-win system used in many other leagues. Reading the competition's points model prevents a correct table from looking like a calculation error.

What changed after MI Cape Town started Season 4 at 0–4 with one no-result?
MI Cape Town lost four of their first five matches and shared two points from the washout at Kingsmead. Wins over Joburg Super Kings in consecutive games finally moved the record to 2–4–1, but a 53-run loss at Centurion interrupted the recovery.
The Newlands win over Sunrisers kept qualification alive at 3–5–1, but MI Cape Town missed the bonus point and then lost the last match in Gqeberha. The final 3–6–1 record reflects a late chase that never fully repaired the opening deficit.
Home-form reality
Was Newlands still an automatic fortress during MI Cape Town's title defence?
No. MI Cape Town won all five home league games in their 2025 championship season, but went 2–3 at Newlands in Season 4. They lost the first three home fixtures before beating Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
A venue nickname describes identity and atmosphere, not a guaranteed result. The season boundary matters because the unbeaten 2025 home run did not carry into the title defence.
Schedule correction
Is the Season 5 final at Newlands in February 2026 or February 2027?
It is scheduled for 21 February 2027. MI Cape Town's fixture article lists all ten team matches in January and February 2027 but prints 2026 in the final sentence, an internal year mismatch.
The official SA20 fixture calendar resolves it by placing Match 34 at Newlands on 21 February 2027. The page retains the ten correct club fixtures and does not repeat the isolated typo.
