Career story

Obed McCoy career and playing journey

01

Who is Obed McCoy?

Obed Christopher McCoy is a West Indies limited-overs bowler from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He bats left-handed and bowls left-arm fast-medium. Cricket West Indies lists 43 T20 internationals between 2019 and 2025, while his two one-day internationals came in 2018. He has not played Test cricket.

McCoy's role is built around left-arm angle, changes of pace and wicket-taking spells in T20 cricket. His batting record is tail-end evidence rather than an all-round case: 68 T20I runs with a high score of 23 not out. The bowling sample, including 52 T20I wickets and 65 CPL wickets through the board's latest competition table, defines the player more accurately.

02

Obed McCoy's Under-19 pathway and early injury

McCoy was selected for West Indies at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, but a split webbing injury required surgery and ruled him out during the group stage. Chemar Holder replaced him before West Indies went on to win the tournament. McCoy was therefore part of the original squad but should not be credited with the later knockout performances or title-winning match contributions.

The interruption is relevant to his pathway because senior international cricket followed two years later. It also foreshadowed an availability pattern that resurfaced at different points in his career. Injuries can explain squad changes, but they do not support assumptions about a player's condition beyond the specific official update.

03

Obed McCoy's ODI and T20I debuts

McCoy made his ODI debut against India in Guwahati on 21 October 2018. His ODI career remains only two matches long, with four wickets at 27.25 and best figures of 2/38. Those four wickets sit inside his broader List A record, so the ODI and List A rows cannot be added together without double-counting.

His T20I debut came against England in March 2019. By the 8 July 2026 cutoff he had played 43 matches and taken 52 wickets at 23.11, with one five-wicket haul. The international career is therefore overwhelmingly T20-led: the T20I sample is more than twenty times the size of his ODI match count, while there is no Test record.

04

The 2021 South Africa series: nine wickets in five matches

McCoy's first sustained international breakthrough came in the five-match home T20I series against South Africa in 2021. Cricket West Indies records nine wickets from five matches at 15.66, an economy rate of 7.05 and a strike rate of 13.3 balls per wicket. He was West Indies' leading T20I wicket-taker for that calendar year heading into the World Cup.

His best spell in the series was 4/22 in Grenada. McCoy dismissed Reeza Hendricks and Temba Bavuma in the powerplay, then removed Rassie van der Dussen and George Linde in the 19th over. South Africa still won that match by one run, so the four-wicket return was a high-impact spell in defeat rather than a match-winning performance.

05

Obed McCoy's 4/26 against Australia

West Indies followed the South Africa series with five T20Is against Australia in July 2021. McCoy played twice and took five wickets while conceding 35 runs from five overs. His 4/26 in the opening match triggered an Australian collapse and helped West Indies defend 145 for an 18-run win at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

That short series line is unusually productive: one wicket per six balls across two appearances. It should still be kept separate from the five-match South Africa record. Together the series explain his 2021 rise, but combining the averages or economy rates would erase the different opposition, match counts and conditions.

06

How Obed McCoy took 6/17 against India

McCoy took 6/17 from four overs against India at Warner Park in Basseterre on 1 August 2022. He removed Rohit Sharma with the first ball of his spell and returned later to dismiss Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh. India were bowled out for 138.

West Indies completed a five-wicket win and McCoy was Player of the Match. ICC reported the spell as the best men's T20I bowling figures by a West Indies player at that date. The six wickets are already part of his 52-wicket career total; explaining the innings separately adds opposition, venue and result without counting the wickets twice.

07

What the 2/66 two days later shows

Two days after the 6/17 record, India scored 225/3 in the third T20I and McCoy returned 2/66 from four overs. At the time, those were the most expensive T20I bowling figures by a West Indies player. The contrast occurred within the same series and is useful evidence of the volatility faced by a pace bowler operating at the end of an innings.

The expensive spell does not cancel the record performance, just as the 6/17 does not represent every match in his career. Across 826 T20I deliveries at the July 2026 cutoff, McCoy conceded 1,202 runs. That produces the stored average of 23.11 and an economy rate of about 8.73 runs per over, a fuller picture than either extreme alone.

08

Obed McCoy's five-wicket Sussex debut

McCoy joined Sussex during the 2022 T20 Blast and took 5/33 on debut against Somerset at Taunton. Sussex had made 216 before McCoy and Tymal Mills drove a late collapse, dismissing Somerset for 169 and completing a 47-run win. The five-for was his first in senior T20 cricket before the later 6/17 for West Indies.

He followed with 4/30 against Middlesex as Sussex won a rain-affected match by five wickets. Across five Blast appearances, the Cricket West Indies competition table lists 14 wickets at 12.00 and a strike rate of 8.3 balls per wicket. That concentrated spell makes the county stint one of his most productive short competition samples.

09

Obed McCoy in IPL 2022

Rajasthan Royals used McCoy in seven IPL matches in 2022. He took 11 wickets at 21.54 with best figures of 3/23. His first appearance ended with the final two Kolkata Knight Riders wickets in a seven-run win, an example of the death-over role for which his slower balls and left-arm angle were selected.

McCoy also took 2/20 against Chennai Super Kings and three wickets in the qualifier win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rajasthan reached the final, where Gujarat Titans won the title. The 11-wicket total belongs to IPL 2022 and is part of his broader T20 career; it should not be added to an overall T20 aggregate as if it were separate.

10

How Obed McCoy reached the 2024 T20 World Cup

McCoy led West Indies A's bowling on the 2024 tour of Nepal with eight wickets from five matches. When Jason Holder was ruled out of the T20 World Cup through injury, West Indies added McCoy to the final squad. The sequence ties his selection to a current performance rather than treating replacement status as accidental.

He played three World Cup matches and took three wickets for 49 runs from 37 balls, with best figures of 3/14. Those tournament wickets are included in his T20I total. West Indies reached the Super Eight stage but did not advance to the semi-finals, so selection and an efficient individual tournament line should not be recast as a title run.

11

Obed McCoy's 2024 injury and return

An injury sustained during CPL 2024 initially made McCoy unavailable for West Indies' November T20I series against England. Cricket West Indies later cleared him and added him as Matthew Forde's replacement for the final two matches. The announcement said Forde had suffered a left thigh injury; it did not specify McCoy's earlier CPL injury type.

The update recorded McCoy at 49 wickets from 38 T20Is before the return. His later snapshot of 52 wickets from 43 matches shows five additional appearances and three wickets, but the aggregate alone does not assign those wickets to a particular series. Match-level claims still require the matching scorecard.

12

Obed McCoy's CPL career

Cricket West Indies lists 65 wickets from 60 Caribbean Premier League matches, with best figures of 4/39, an average of 26.10 and an economy rate of 8.83. The record spans several franchises and seasons rather than one uninterrupted team relationship. His 2022 campaign for Barbados Royals produced 15 wickets from 11 matches.

For 2026, the CPL local-player draft moved him to St Kitts & Nevis Patriots for the first time. That current membership should not rewrite his earlier Barbados Royals or St Lucia franchise history. CPL totals change during an active season, so the career aggregate and the 2026 scorecard cutoff need separate dates.

13

Obed McCoy with St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in 2026

McCoy's first two Patriots appearances came against Trinbago Knight Riders on 8 August and St Lucia Kings on 12 August. He returned 0/22 from two overs in the DLS defeat to Trinbago, then took 1/34 from four overs as the Patriots chased 156 to beat St Lucia by five wickets. Those two matches produced one wicket from six overs.

He then took 1/27 from four overs against Jamaica Kingsmen on 18 August, dismissing Rovman Powell, but the Patriots lost by 51 runs after being bowled out for 130. Against Antigua & Barbuda Falcons on 20 August, McCoy returned 1/33 from four overs in a three-wicket defeat. Through that scorecard cutoff, his four-match CPL 2026 line was three wickets from 14 overs for 116 runs, an average of 38.67 and an economy rate of 8.29. The active season is not projected beyond 20 August.

14

Where Obed McCoy has been most effective

McCoy's best returns have come in competitions where his left-arm pace and slower-ball options can be used in short spells. The 2021 South Africa series, 2022 Sussex campaign and 6/17 against India all produced a wicket at least every 13.3 balls. His broader T20I strike rate at the July 2026 cutoff is 15.8 balls per wicket, still clearly stronger than his first-class rate of 69.0.

That comparison does not prove he cannot succeed in longer cricket; four first-class matches are too small a base for a final judgement. It shows where the established evidence sits. His best first-class figures are 3/56 and his List A best is 2/28, while T20 cricket supplies the five-wicket haul, international record, IPL playoff contribution and far larger career sample.

15

What Obed McCoy's career numbers show

McCoy's strongest evidence is in T20 cricket. The international line of 52 wickets from 43 matches equals about 1.21 wickets per appearance, while the board's CPL line is 65 from 60. His best periods were more concentrated: nine wickets in five matches against South Africa, five in two against Australia and 14 in five for Sussex.

The record also contains volatility and limited longer-format depth. He has four ODI wickets, six first-class wickets and 19 List A wickets, compared with the much larger T20 samples. The 6/17 peak and 2/66 two days later capture the risk of judging a death bowler from one spell. His current value remains wicket-taking variety in short competitions, subject to availability and match conditions.
