Team overview

Sunrisers Eastern Cape at a glance

Sunrisers Eastern Cape are Gqeberha's SA20 franchise, owned by Sun Group. They share a parent group and orange identity with Sunrisers Hyderabad, but the South African and Indian teams have separate competitions, squads, results and honours.

SEC have reached every SA20 final. Aiden Markram led the side to the inaugural 2023 title and a successful defence in 2024. They finished runners-up to MI Cape Town in 2025 before Tristan Stubbs captained them back to the trophy in 2026.

In Season 4, SEC placed first after ten league fixtures with five wins, three losses, two rain no-results, 28 points and a league-best +1.762 net run rate. A Qualifier 1 defeat was followed by wins in Qualifier 2 and the Final, producing a complete 7–4–2 record.

Quinton de Kock led the competition with 390 runs and won both Player and Batter of the Season. Jordan Hermann added 273 and was Rising Star. Anrich Nortje led SEC with 18 wickets, while Marco Jansen combined 77 runs with 13 wickets and delivered 3/10 in the Final.

The Final at Newlands turned on an unbeaten 114-run fifth-wicket stand between Matthew Breetzke and Stubbs. SEC chased Pretoria Capitals' 158/7 with four balls remaining to claim a third title in four seasons.

Squad-state reality

Why does this page show 21 Sunrisers Eastern Cape players instead of a 2027 squad?

The 21 names form the completed Season 4 roster timeline: 19 from SA20's updated squad, Tharindu Rathnayake from the final squad PDF and documented in-season import Chris Green. They are not being presented as retained for Season 5.

The current official team selector is set to 2027 but says no players were found. Until SA20 publishes the new roster, the useful honest state is the closed title squad beside the confirmed 2027 fixtures.

Playoff mechanics

How could SEC lose Qualifier 1 and still win the SA20 title?

A top-two league finish provided a second route to the Final. Pretoria beat top-ranked SEC by seven wickets in Qualifier 1, sending the Capitals directly through and SEC into Qualifier 2 rather than eliminating them.

SEC then beat Paarl Royals by seven wickets and defeated Pretoria in the Final. This is why the completed campaign contains four losses but still ends with the championship.

Myth versus reality

Did four straight finals mean SEC topped the league in every season?

No. SEC reached the 2023 Final from third, topped the league in 2024, reached the 2025 Final after finishing fourth and returned from first in 2026. Their final streak is broader than a run of dominant league tables.

The record demonstrates repeated playoff conversion under different routes. It should not be rewritten as four league-stage titles or four championships: the exact return is three trophies and one runners-up finish.

Advanced final breakdown

How much of SEC's final chase came from the Breetzke-Stubbs partnership?

The unbeaten fifth-wicket stand added 114 of SEC's 162 runs, or 70.4% of the final total. It began after the fourth wicket fell with 48 on the board and carried the chase to 162/4 with four balls left.

The finish was sharply back-loaded: Stubbs took 21 from the 18th over, the pair added 12 in the 19th, and the captain ended the match with consecutive sixes. The partnership figure explains recovery; the over sequence explains acceleration.

Award boundaries

Did SEC's four Team of the Season players win every major Season 4 award?

No. Quinton de Kock won Player and Batter of the Season, Jordan Hermann won Rising Star, and de Kock, Hermann, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje made the official Team of the Season.

Paarl Royals' Ottneil Baartman won Bowler of the Season, while Pretoria's Dewald Brevis was Player of the Final despite SEC winning the match. Team success, statistical selection and individual awards remain separate judgements.
