Colombo Kaps 2026 Squad, Results, Stats & History

Colombo Kaps are the current Colombo franchise in the Lanka Premier League. Witness Sports Alliance LLC took ownership ahead of Season 6, led by Saranyan Palaniswamy and K.C. Shyam Kangayan, and launched the Kaps name for the 2026 season.

The Kaps finished third in the eight-match league table with four wins, four losses, eight points and a +0.108 net run rate. They then beat Kandy Royals by 68 runs in the Eliminator before Galle Gallants ended their season by six wickets in Qualifier 2.

Kusal Mendis began the season as captain but a right hamstring injury ruled him out after two matches. Official tournament management appointed vice-captain Kamindu Mendis to lead the side for the rest of the campaign; he also finished as Colombo's leading run-scorer.

Kusal Mendis was Colombo Kaps' original captain and led the first two matches. He injured his right hamstring during the 19 July chase against Kandy Royals and was ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

The LPL announced on 22 July that Kamindu Mendis would captain Colombo for the remainder of the season. The competition's team directory still shows its earlier Kusal-as-captain and Kamindu-as-vice-captain labels, while the later dated release records the change that actually governed the final eight matches.

For the completed-season record, the clearest wording is therefore: Kusal Mendis was the opening captain; Kamindu Mendis was the replacement captain and led Colombo through Qualifier 2. The two labels describe different points in the same season, not rival claims about one unchanged role.

Colombo Kaps made 197/5 and beat Dambulla Sixers, who finished on 176/8, by 21 runs. Kamindu Mendis scored an unbeaten 88 from 39 balls in Colombo's innings.

The official LPL results card pairs the two team labels with the opposite totals, even though its winner line says Colombo won by 21 runs. The competition's full match report gives the unambiguous order: Colombo 197/5, Dambulla 176/8.

That is the score used in the results table. It also preserves the innings scope—both sides completed 20 overs—rather than relying on the compact card alone when its labels and result do not agree.

Colombo Kaps entered LPL 2026 under a new name and a new ownership group, Witness Sports Alliance LLC. It was the first season played under the Kaps identity, so every current squad, leader and result on this page is limited to 2026.

The LPL's Colombo slot had previously competed as Colombo Strikers in 2024 and under other names in earlier editions. That history provides city-franchise context, but it should not turn Kamindu Mendis' 280 Kaps runs into a combined all-era total.

The season-history table therefore identifies the immediately preceding Colombo Strikers campaign separately. 'First season as Colombo Kaps' means first season under the present name and ownership, not the first time Colombo has had an LPL franchise.

Colombo's eight points came from the league stage, where the Kaps won four and lost four. Their fifth win was the Eliminator against Kandy Royals, a knockout match that advanced the team but did not add league-table points.

Qualifier 2 works the same way. The six-wicket loss to Galle belongs in Colombo's complete 10-match record, but it does not change the published 8-match table line or the +0.108 league-stage net run rate.

The two useful summaries answer different questions: 4-4 and eight points explains qualification; 5-5 overall explains the entire season. Adding playoff results to the points table would mix competition stages and create a false total.

Three of Colombo's five wins came against Kandy Royals: a six-wicket chase, a 23-run league win and the 68-run Eliminator. The Kaps therefore went 3-0 in that matchup across the completed season.

Results against the rest of the field were much less favourable. Colombo split two games with Dambulla, lost both meetings with Jaffna and lost all three meetings with Galle, including Qualifier 2.

This is why one dominant matchup should not be mistaken for broad season control. Colombo's Kandy record secured a playoff step, while a 2-5 record against the other three opponents kept the overall campaign level at five wins and five losses.
