Team overview
Canterbury Magicians at a glance
Canterbury Magicians are Canterbury Cricket's women's provincial team. They compete in the Women's Super Smash and the 50-over Hallyburton Johnstone Shield; the Canterbury Kings are the separate men's side.
The Magicians finished the 2025/26 Super Smash sixth with one win, nine losses, two bonus points and six total points. Their lone win was a nine-wicket home chase against Otago Sparks.
NZC records establish six Canterbury women's national T20 titles, from the inaugural 2007/08 championship through the most recent win in 2022/23. Canterbury Cricket's team page still says four, so the season-by-season governing-body record controls this page. Rhys Morgan remains head coach, supported by Fred Anderson and Amy Satterthwaite.
Directory and contract boundary
Is Canterbury's 14-player directory a final Super Smash squad?
No. The current Canterbury Cricket page is a wider team directory, not a named final 2026/27 match squad. Selection, injuries and international availability can still change the playing group.
Canterbury's own 2025/26 announcement called Kate Irwin the 13th and final domestically contracted player. The 14-name directory also included Lea Tahuhu, who held a WHITE FERNS central contract for that season.
Match appearances are a third scope again. Naomi Stalenberg, Stella Cornelius and Lauren Smith appeared during the 2025/26 Super Smash even though they are not in the current 14-name directory.
Points-table arithmetic
How did one win give Canterbury Magicians six points?
A Super Smash win was worth four points, and Canterbury collected two separate bonus points. That produced six points from one win and nine losses.
The official table records no tie, no-result or abandonment for Canterbury. The extra two points therefore came from the bonus-point column, not from weather-affected matches.
Their net run rate of -1.820 was the lowest in the competition, but no tiebreak was required: fifth-placed Otago finished 16 points ahead on 22.
The only win, scorecard explained
What changed in Canterbury's nine-wicket win over Otago?
Canterbury's only win was a complete chase rather than a narrow escape. They held Otago to 141/7 and reached 145/1 in 17.5 overs at Hagley Oval.
Missy Banks took 3/32 and Sarah Asmussen 2/14 before Kate Anderson and Naomi Stalenberg added 113 for the first wicket. Anderson finished 66 not out, Stalenberg made 51 and Izzy Sharp closed the chase with 23 not out.
The result showed what the season table alone hides: the Magicians could combine controlled bowling and a stable top order, but they did it only once across ten league matches.
Home-ground reality check
Did five matches at Hagley Oval create a home advantage?
Not in the completed record. Canterbury went 1–4 in their five Hagley Oval league matches and 0–5 across Alexandra, Nelson, Hamilton, Auckland and Wellington.
Their sole victory and best chase came at Hagley, but the same venue also contained losses by 80, 48, six and DLS-adjusted seven wickets. One strong home performance did not become a repeatable advantage.
This is why the venue should be described as Canterbury's principal home, not as proof of a strong home record.
Myth versus record
Have Canterbury Magicians won four or six national T20 titles?
NZC's current champions page lists five Canterbury wins from 2010/11 onward, and its 2007/08 annual record confirms Canterbury won the inaugural women's national T20 competition. Together they establish six title seasons: 2007/08, 2010/11, 2011/12, 2015/16, 2020/21 and 2022/23.
Canterbury Cricket's current team introduction still says four championships. Its own earlier 2015/16 match report described that victory as Canterbury's fourth, before the later 2020/21 and 2022/23 wins took the total to six.
The apparent contradiction is therefore a stale headline count, not two different current title systems. Naming changes across the national T20 competition do not erase earlier championship seasons.
One win from ten matches
Canterbury finished sixth with one win, nine losses and two bonus points. The 2026/27 Super Smash schedule and final match squad are not yet published.

Canterbury Cricket's current team page lists these 14 women. That directory is not a final 2026/27 Super Smash squad: Canterbury announced 13 domestic contracts for 2025/26, while centrally contracted Lea Tahuhu was also in the wider directory. Izzy Sharp now holds a 2026/27 WHITE FERNS central contract, and the next match squad and captain remain unannounced.
