Team overview
Barbados Tridents at a glance
Barbados Tridents is one of the Caribbean Premier League's original men's franchises. It competed under the Tridents name from 2013 through 2020, became Barbados Royals from 2021 through 2025, and restored the Tridents identity and Barbados blue-and-gold colours for CPL 2026.
The 2026 relaunch forms part of a three-year One Barbados partnership between the Government of Barbados and Royals Sports Group. Majority ownership and day-to-day management remain with Royals Sports Group, while the government partnership announced a proposed minority co-investment subject to approvals.
The Tridents opened CPL 2026 with a five-run win over Jamaica Kingsmen at Sabina Park. Brandon King's 73 and Sherfane Rutherford's unbeaten 50 carried Barbados to 206/3, before Daniel Sams took 4/20 as Jamaica finished 201/9.
Does the restored Tridents name create a new Barbados franchise?
No. The 2026 name change restores the original identity of the same Barbados men's CPL franchise. Its Tridents seasons from 2013 to 2020, Royals seasons from 2021 to 2025 and new Tridents season form one continuous team history.
That continuity is why the 2014 and 2019 titles remain part of the men's franchise record. It does not permit the separate Barbados women's WCPL results to be added to this page.
Does the Government of Barbados own or run the Tridents?
Not on the terms announced for the One Barbados partnership. Royals Sports Group retained majority ownership and day-to-day management, while the government described a proposed minority co-investment that remained subject to approvals.
The public partnership and restored national colours make the team look more closely tied to Barbados, but representation is not the same as operational control. The page therefore separates the public partner from the majority owner and operator.
Why does the roster contain 17 players when only 11 appeared in the opener?
The 17-name list is the published season or match-centre roster, not an appearance record. Barbados used 11 players against Jamaica, and the scorecard is the evidence for who actually batted, bowled or fielded in that match.
A reserve can remain part of the squad without appearing in the XI. This distinction prevents an unused player from receiving a match statistic and prevents one omission from being misreported as a release.
How did Barbados defend 206 when Jamaica reached 201?
Barbados combined a strong top-order total with enough wickets to interrupt the chase. Daniel Sams took 4/20, Chris Green added 2/27 and Jamaica finished five runs short despite Andre Russell's 68 and Vitel Lawes' 32.
The narrow margin matters: 206/3 was not a comfortable defence. Jamaica lost nine wickets but still used all 20 overs, so Barbados' opening win shows both high-end scoring and a late-game control question rather than a one-sided performance.
What do Daniel Sams' 4/20 figures reveal beyond the wicket total?
Sams supplied half of the eight wickets credited to Barbados bowlers and conceded only five runs per over. The other four bowlers conceded 177 runs from 16 overs, so his spell was the main source of control in a 201-run chase.
This is an early one-match split, not a season trend. It does show why a team total can look expensive while one bowler remains highly effective: wicket share and economy need to be read together, with the ninth dismissal recorded as a run-out.
